St. Michael’s Cathedral Basilica is the mother church of the Archdiocese of Toronto and the Cathedral Church of His Eminence Frank Cardinal Leo, Metropolitan Archbishop of Toronto. The Cathedral, designated as a pilgrimage church and destination during this Holy Year has been a visible sign of the Catholic faith in the city for over 175 years and is one of the oldest churches in the downtown core. In 1841 Bishop Michael Power was appointed as the first Bishop of Toronto and in 1845 construction of the Cathedral began and has served its community ever since. The Cathedral is one of Toronto’s historical landmarks. Buried within the newly restored Crypt Chapel is the tomb of Bishop Power and the first Loretto Sisters to Canada.
